Movement Building

Preceding its launch, a Secretariat was established under the guidance of Clean Start Africa, entrusted with the task of formalizing the Movement. The Secretariat’s responsibilities included naming the movement, drafting a constitution, appointing office bearers, and initiating the registration process. Consequently, the name “Sisters Supporting Sisters (SSS)” was chosen, office bearers were appointed, and a constitution was drafted. The inaugural event, attended by over 300 formerly incarcerated women, marked the successful launch of the Movement during the Beyond the Bars Conference. The event also saw the election of regional leaders from various regions.
Following its inception, Sisters Supporting Sisters (SSS) began its membership Registration drive, attracting 500 members.
The Movement anticipates a surge in membership as it aims to encompass all formerly incarcerated women, including those from other African countries who have served in Kenya.
Though regional activities are pending commencement, the Secretariat, in collaboration with Clean Start Africa, has actively participated in national forums, conferences, and meetings within the criminal justice sphere. Noteworthy engagements include forums on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) hosted by the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) and the Prevention Summit organized by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), where Sisters Supporting Sisters (SSS) representatives have shared their lived experiences.
