The Problem

When a woman is arrested and imprisoned, she faces a myriad of challenges, some of which last a lifetime.

Stigma, isolation, abandonment, lack of education and employment opportunities, pain and outrage are just a few of the challenges that a formerly imprisoned woman faces upon her release. They’re often left wondering how to reintegrate, reconnect, be productive and thrive.

Through our Circle of Healing, imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women meet in safe, peer-led spaces where they gain psycho-social support and trauma-healing. This provides the groundwork for reconciliation, mental wellness and goal setting. The program is run using our self-proprietary curriculum called Ufunuo.

Ufunuo Program

The Ufunuo Program is a journey of self-discovery, where imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women are helped in breaking old habits and limiting beliefs by creating new pathways and beliefs that enable them to unleash their potential.

The Ufunuo Program is carried out both in person and virtually. During the training, beneficiaries are taken on a journey of self-discovery where they get to know themselves, taught how to deal with emotions, equipped to share their story, taught forgiveness and to restore broken relationships, taught how to deal with the community, given the tools necessary to set goals and map out how they will achieve them.

Circles

Circles (of Healing) are social peer-led groups that provide a safe healing space for imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women.

These enable the women to build resilience, connections and reconciliation that results in effective transition and reintegration. This process is required for physiological wellbeing of imprisoned and formerly imprisoned women.
